What is your mental age?

Mental age refers to an individual's level of cognitive functioning, typically measured through intelligence tests. It is a concept that was first introduced by French psychologist Alfred Binet in the early 1900s as a way to assess the intellectual abilities of children. The idea behind mental age is that a person's cognitive abilities can be compared to those of others at different chronological ages.

The difference between chronological age and mental age

Chronological age refers to a person's age in years, months, and days since their birth. It's a straightforward measurement that everyone knows, and it's used to determine everything from when a person is eligible to vote or get a driver's license to when they can retire. On the other hand, mental age refers to an individual's cognitive abilities, as measured by standardized intelligence tests. Unlike chronological age, mental age is not based on the number of years since birth, but rather the individual's level of intellectual functioning relative to their chronological age peers.

For example, a 50-year-old person might have a mental age that is higher or lower than their chronological age, depending on their cognitive abilities. This means that two people of the same chronological age can have vastly different mental ages, and vice versa. While chronological age is a fixed and objective measurement, mental age can change over time, reflecting improvements or declines in cognitive abilities.
